Questions to Ask a Travel Therapist Recruiter Before Signing
Use this practical recruiter question list before signing a travel therapy contract, including pay, housing, cancellation, productivity, licensure, and support.
Travel Therapy Resources
The questions you ask before signing can protect your money, your license, your schedule, and your peace. A travel contract can look exciting, but the details matter. This guide is designed to help you slow down, ask clearly, and compare opportunities without feeling pushed.
Important: This post is based on personal experience and general education. Licensure, taxes, compact privileges, agency policies, pay packages, and referral policies can change. Always verify details with official licensing boards, the PT Compact, a tax professional, and the agency or facility involved.

Pay package questions
Ask for the taxable hourly rate, weekly gross, estimated weekly take-home, housing stipend, meals stipend, overtime rules, holiday pay, missed-hours policy, reimbursements, and whether guaranteed hours apply. Ask how pay changes if the facility cancels a shift or if you take approved time off.
Housing and location questions
Ask whether agency housing is available, how the stipend is paid, whether the area has realistic furnished options, what the commute looks like, whether parking is included, and whether the facility is in a safe area. A contract is only good if you can live near it without draining your budget.
Visual section
Add a simple checklist graphic or personal work/travel photo that supports this section without turning the post into a busy gallery.
Facility and caseload questions
Ask about setting, patient population, productivity expectations, documentation system, schedule, weekend requirements, orientation length, team structure, supervisor availability, and whether other travelers are currently there. If you are newer to travel, support matters.
Cancellation and contract terms
Ask what happens if the facility cancels the contract early, reduces hours, changes the schedule, or asks for an extension. Ask whether there are penalties, notice periods, or non-compete language. Read the contract, not just the email summary.
The right Travel PTA contract should make sense on paper and feel sustainable in real life.
Licensure and credentialing questions
Ask who pays for license fees, how long credentialing usually takes, what documents are required, and whether the start date is realistic. Licensure delays can affect your timeline, especially in states with more steps.
Support questions
Ask who handles payroll, compliance, benefits, clinical concerns, and urgent issues after hours. A recruiter can be great, but you also need to know the support system behind them.
My experience
My Travel PTA note
I am licensed as a PTA in New York and New Jersey, and travel PTA work has shaped the way I think about contracts, recruiters, housing, and career flexibility. Coworkers recommended National Staffing Solutions to me, and my recruiter Mike has been helpful and communicative. I have had a positive overall experience working with National for about three years.
If you decide to explore opportunities with National Staffing Solutions, you can mention that Iris Lee, PTA referred you. If someone I refer is successfully placed through National Staffing Solutions, I may receive a referral bonus if someone I refer is successfully placed through National Staffing Solutions. This does not cost the candidate anything. Referral programs and bonus amounts may change, so always verify details directly with National Staffing Solutions.
