Starting a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program is already a huge commitment—but doing it in a hybrid format adds a whole new layer of planning, discipline, and honestly… survival strategies.

As someone currently in a hybrid DPT program at Arcadia University, I’ve had to figure out how to stay on top of school, manage travel weeks, and still take care of myself. In this post, I’m sharing how I balance it all—from how the hybrid program actually works to how I stay consistent with meals, plus a few money-saving strategies that have helped me along the way.

🎓 What Is Arcadia’s Hybrid DPT Program Like?

Arcadia’s hybrid DPT program is designed to give you flexibility while still maintaining a high level of academic rigor.

Instead of being in-person every day, the program is structured like this:

  • 📚 Online coursework (lectures, assignments, studying)
  • 🧑‍⚕️ In-person lab immersions (hands-on training weeks)

This means most of the time, I’m studying remotely—but during lab weeks, I travel and spend full days practicing skills, working with classmates, and applying what we’ve learned.

👉 It’s the best of both worlds:

  • flexibility during the week
  • hands-on learning when it matters

But it also requires:

  • strong time management
  • planning ahead
  • staying consistent

🍱 How I Handle Meals During Lab Weeks

One thing I realized quickly during in-person weeks:

👉 I do NOT have time to cook.

Between long lab days, commuting, and studying afterward, figuring out what to eat becomes stressful fast.

That’s why I rely on Factor meals during my busiest weeks.

Why this works for me:

  • Fully prepared meals (no cooking needed)
  • High-protein options (perfect for long days)
  • Saves time and mental energy
  • Helps me avoid eating out constantly

Instead of asking:
“What should I eat?”

👉 I already have something ready in minutes.

And honestly, that consistency makes a huge difference during intense weeks.

💸 Saving Money While in DPT School

Let’s be real—DPT school is expensive.

So I’ve been intentional about saving money wherever I can, especially during travel and in-person weeks.

🏨 Hotel Points & Travel Rewards

When I travel for lab weeks, I try to stick with one hotel brand.

I usually book with IHG hotels so I can earn points and use them for future stays .

Over time, those points add up and can cover:

  • free nights
  • discounted stays
  • future travel

💡 If you’re traveling often for school, this is one of the easiest ways to save money long-term.

💳 Credit Card Strategy

I also use a travel credit card to:

  • earn points on hotel stays
  • get rewards on everyday spending

The key is:
👉 not spending more
👉 just earning rewards on what you already spend

Even small things like groceries or gas can turn into points that help offset travel costs.

🍽️ Food Strategy

Instead of constantly eating out during busy weeks, I try to keep things simple:

  • Pre-made meals during intense weeks
  • Meal prepping when I have time
  • Avoiding unnecessary spending

👉 This alone saves more money than you think.

🧠 What’s Actually Helping Me Stay Consistent

The biggest thing I’ve learned so far is this:

👉 You don’t need a perfect system
👉 You need a realistic one

For me, that looks like:

  • hybrid learning structure
  • easy meal solutions during busy weeks
  • simple money habits
  • not overcomplicating everything

Final Thoughts

Hybrid DPT programs give you flexibility, but they also require you to be more intentional with your time, energy, and routine.

Finding systems that work for YOU—whether that’s simplifying meals, being strategic with money, or planning ahead—makes everything more manageable.

I’m still figuring things out as I go, but I’ll be sharing more about my journey through DPT school, travel weeks, and everything in between.
