How to Compare Travel Therapy Agencies Without Getting Overwhelmed

Compare travel therapy agencies with a clear framework for pay, recruiter communication, benefits, contracts, support, transparency, and fit.

Travel Therapy Resources

Choosing a travel therapy agency can feel like dating with paperwork. Everyone sounds helpful at the beginning, every pay package has a different format, and every recruiter has a slightly different communication style. The goal is not to find a perfect agency. The goal is to find a team that communicates clearly, respects your license and goals, and gives you enough information to make calm decisions.

Important: This post is based on personal experience and general education. Licensure, taxes, compact privileges, agency policies, pay packages, and referral policies can change. Always verify details with official licensing boards, the PT Compact, a tax professional, and the agency or facility involved.

Start with communication

A good recruiter does not need to be flashy. They need to be responsive, clear, and honest about what they know and what they do not know. Notice how they answer questions before you sign. Do they explain details in writing? Do they follow up? Do they pressure you to decide before you understand the offer? Your pre-contract communication often predicts your contract experience.

Compare the whole pay package

Do not compare agencies by weekly gross alone. Ask for taxable hourly rate, housing stipend, meals and incidentals, guaranteed hours, overtime rules, holiday pay, reimbursements, insurance costs, retirement options, and cancellation language. A higher gross package can still be weaker if housing is expensive or benefits are not aligned with your needs.

Visual section

Add a simple checklist graphic or personal work/travel photo that supports this section without turning the post into a busy gallery.

Look at contract transparency

Ask to see details before you commit: setting, schedule, productivity expectations, orientation, documentation system, patient population, supervisor structure, time-off approval, and facility cancellation terms. If the answers are vague, pause.

Ask about support after placement

Some agencies are great until the contract starts. Ask who helps if there is a payroll issue, housing issue, facility conflict, or assignment concern. Ask whether you will have a clinical contact or only recruiter support.

The right Travel PTA contract should make sense on paper and feel sustainable in real life.

Benefits and reimbursements

Licensure reimbursement, CEU support, health insurance timing, credentialing help, and payroll reliability can matter as much as a small pay difference. If you are traveling while applying to school or managing life transitions, dependable admin support is not a luxury.

My agency filter

I pay attention to how I feel after a conversation. Do I feel informed or rushed? Respected or sold to? Clear or confused? Travel therapy requires trust, so the small communication details matter.

My experience

My Travel PTA note

I am licensed as a PTA in New York and New Jersey, and travel PTA work has shaped the way I think about contracts, recruiters, housing, and career flexibility. Coworkers recommended National Staffing Solutions to me, and my recruiter Mike has been helpful and communicative. I have had a positive overall experience working with National for about three years.

If you decide to explore opportunities with National Staffing Solutions, you can mention that Iris Lee, PTA referred you. If someone I refer is successfully placed through National Staffing Solutions, I may receive a referral bonus if someone I refer is successfully placed through National Staffing Solutions. This does not cost the candidate anything. Referral programs and bonus amounts may change, so always verify details directly with National Staffing Solutions.
